General description of the collection: This collection consists of a final education, political and economic briefing prepared and delivered by SCAP (Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers) staff in Japan in about 1952, prior to the return of Japanese sovereignty. In "Post-War Education in Japan," Lt. Colonel Donald Nugent summarizes US efforts to reestablish the Japanese education system. Frank Rizzo describes the political atmosphere in Japan during the occupation, and predicts the necessary shift from US as overseers of the Japanese government to an influencing presence, in his briefing, "Political Developments in Japan." Dr. Sherwood Fine's briefing, "Summary and Evaluation of Japan's Economic Recovery Under the Occupation," summarizes the history of US involvement in Japan's post-war economy and makes predictions about Japan's short-term economic health. All three briefings describe positive improvements in Japan's education, political and economic sectors with special emphasis on the strength of Japan's new democratic institutions, especially against a possible reemergence of war-time attitudes and communist tactics.
